Virgil Abloh. Nike. ICONS | Taschen
Virgil Abloh. Nike. ICONS | Taschen
The Sneaker as (Hyper)ObjectNike and Virgil Abloh reinvigorated 10 icons of sneaker historyIn 2016, sportswear manufacturer Nike and fashion designer Virgil Abloh joined forces to create a sneaker collection celebrating 10 of the Oregon-based company's most iconic shoes. With their project The Ten - which reimagined icons like Air Jordan 1, Air Max 90, Air Force 1, and Air Presto, among others - they reinvigorated sneaker culture.Virgil Abloh's designs offer deep insights into engineering ingenuity and burst with cultural cachet. Drawing on the genius of the original shoe using lettering, ironic labels, collage, and sculpting techniques, Abloh played with language and sculptural elements to construct new meaning. Inspired by the wit of Dadaism, architectural theory, and avant-garde happenings, he analyzed what makes each shoe iconic and deconstructed it into an artistic assemblage, making each shoe into a piece of industrial design, a readymade sculpture, and a wearable all at once.ICO…

You & I (2 Discs) | Jeff Buckley
You & I (2 Discs) | Jeff Buckley
Double vinyl LP pressing. 2016 release. Jeff Buckley's first recording sessions in 1993 in NYC were largely an informal exercise to acclimate the 27-year-old with a recording studio. Recently discovered in the Sony Music archives during the research for the 20th anniversary edition of Buckley's Grace album, the performances on You And I are a revelation, an intimate portrait of the artist performing a variety of cover songs and original music expressing a range of emotion channeled through his singular sensibility. These intimate, raw and spirited sessions mark Buckley's first time recording versions of electric cover songs such as Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman," Sly & The Family Stone's "Everyday People," and Led Zeppelin's "Night Flight" and a previously unissued track, "Dream of You And I". Long rumored to exist, as the "Addabbo sessions", but previously unheard outside the studio, these seminal recordings are a fan's Holy Grail, a rare opportunity to hear Jeff Buckley in peak form…

Jean-Michel Basquiat (40th Edition) | Hans Werner Holzwarth / Eleanor Nairne
Brilliant BasquiatAn unprecedented insight into Basquiat's art and workThe legend of Jean-Michel Basquiat is as strong as ever. Synonymous with 1980s New York, the artist first appeared in the late 1970s under the tag SAMO, spraying caustic comments and fragmented poems on the walls of the city. He appeared as part of a thriving underground scene of visual arts and graffiti, hip hop, post-punk, and DIY filmmaking, which met in a booming art world. As a painter with a strong personal voice, Basquiat soon broke into the established milieu, exhibiting in galleries around the world.Basquiat's expressive style was based on raw figures and integrated words and phrases. His work is inspired by a pantheon of luminaries from jazz, boxing, and basketball, with references to arcane history and the politics of street life - so when asked about his subject matter, Basquiat answered "royalty, heroism and the streets." In 1983 he started collaborating with the most famous of art stars, Andy Warhol, a…

More about Not Just Sneakers | Jeff Staple

Product description

In 1997, Jeff Staple walked into a boutique in New York City wearing a shirt he printed in his silkscreen class at Parsons School of Design. What started as a small T-Shirt line handmade by Jeff Staple, grew organically and began to gain visibility in NYC. In the process of building this burgeoning brand, Nike asked Jeff Staple in 2005 to create a special commemorative sneaker that would represent New York. The Staple Pigeon Dunk SB was conceived and led to much fanfare upon its release and exposed Staple as well as sneaker culture to the masses. With roots tied to Fader Magazine, a history of collabs with Shake Shack, and three separate projects with automotive companies. In Jeff s words, to understand is to see, and to see is to have clarity of mind. That clarity has helped develop his iconic Pigeon logo (and brand) into a global force that has graced the heels of almost every major footwear brand imaginable. This book offers readers a history lesson in streetwear and the sneaker industry while also uncovering design context to a series of Staple s most crucial projects. A beautiful visual reference, this book invites you to travel down an intricate maze of streetwear history told through an insider s point of view. Archival sketches, drawings, magazine covers, and a foreword by Hiroshi Fujiwara make this an indispensable volume for lovers of streetwear and design.
