Elvis & the Birth of Rock & Roll | Alfred Wertheimer / Chris Murray / Robert Santelli
The King of Rock 'n' Roll is bornThe making of Elvis, behind the scenes"Elvis who?" was photographer Alfred Wertheimer's response when, in early 1956, an RCA Victor publicist asked him to photograph an up-and-coming crooner from Memphis. Little did Wertheimer know that this would be the job of his life: just 21 years old, Elvis Presley was - as we now know - about to become a legend.Trailing Presley like a shadow, Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs of Presley that year, creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of superstardom. Extraordinary in its intimacy and unparalleled in its scope, Wertheimer's Elvis project immortalized a young man in the very process of making history.Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll collects Wertheimer's most remarkable Elvis shots from that magical year, along with a selection of his historic 1958 pictures of the star being shipped off to an army base in Germany. Each chapter is illustrated with a poster by Hatch Show Print, one o…

The Rolling Stones Updated Edition | Reuel Golden
It's Just a Shot AwayThe definitive, authorized, illustrated history of The Rolling StonesThe kind of fame and success The Rolling Stones have achieved in their almost 60-year career is without parallel; their most famous riffs and catchiest lyrics are indelibly engraved in our collective memory. With their mesmerizing on- and off-stage presence, the Stones set the standard for how a rock band should sound, pose, pout, and behave. They were the first to instinctively understand that what you looked like was as important as the music, and that photography had a vital role in promoting that image. "The clothes and the hair are always impeccable," describes author Luc Sante. "They were playing themselves, but with such consistent finesse you knew they were instinctively aware of the camera and how good they will look in the photos." Unsurprisingly many of the greatest photographers in the history of the medium wanted to take their picture.Produced in close collaboration with the band, thi…

King Tut the Journey Through the Underworld 40th Edition | Taschen
Buried in the 14th century BC but unearthed by Howard Carter in 1922, the objects entombed with Tutankhamun are an invaluable window into a long-extinct belief system. Seen today, they create an intricate picture of how the ancient Egyptian people viewed the perilous journey to paradise, a utopian Egypt that could only be entered following the final judgment. When acclaimed photographer Sandro Vannini started his work in Egypt in the late '90s, a technological revolution was about to unfold. Emerging technologies enabled him to document murals, tombs, and artifacts in unprecedented detail. Using the time-consuming and strenuous multi-shot technique, Vannini produced complete photographic reproductions that revealed colors in their original tones with vivid intensity. Through these extraordinary images, we discover the objects' quintessential features alongside the sophisticated and cleverly hidden details. This comprehensive guide marks the centenary of Carter's first excavations in the …

Marvel Comics Library. Spider-Man Vol. 1 (1962-1964) | David Mandel / Ralph Macchio / Stan Lee / Steve Ditko
Birth of a LegendThe origins of the teenager who broke the superhero moldWhen Stan Lee first pitched the idea of Spider-Man in 1962, his boss was full of objections: People hate spiders. Teenagers aren't lead characters; they're sidekicks. He should be glamorous and successful, not a friendless loser. But Stan persisted and Martin Goodman let him give the unlikely hero a tryout in Amazing Fantasy, which was already slated for cancellation. With Spider-Man on the cover, No. 15 shot to the top of Marvel's best-seller list for the year, and the rest is history.Amazing Spider-Man, which debuted seven months later, broke the comics mold. Peter Parker lived in uncool Queens, was always broke, continually worried about his Aunt May, was unlucky in love, and was constantly getting yelled at by his boss, Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. Spider-Man had the quips and confidence that Parker lacked, but learning to use his powers wasn't always easy. He often seemed on the verge of defeat aga…

Transformer Rm | Lou Reed
Transformer Rm | Lou Reed
Vinyl LP pressing. Digitally remastered edition of this 1972 release. Transformer is the second solo studio album by Lou Reed. Produced by David Bowie and arranged by Mick Ronson, the album was released in November 1972 by RCA Records. Bowie had been an early fan of the Velvet Underground, and used his own fame to promote Reed, then a cult favorite who had not yet achieved mainstream success, and had seen his self-titled solo debut album released a year earlier fall into obscurity. Transformer is one of Reed's strongest and consistent solo albums, and contains the songs "Satellite of Love", "Perfect Day" and "Walk on the Wild Side". As with it's predecessor Lou Reed, Transformer contains songs Reed composed while in the Velvet Underground (here, four out of ten). As in Reed's Velvet Underground days, the Andy Warhol connection remained strong. According to Reed, Warhol told him he should write a song about someone vicious. When Reed asked what he meant by vicious, Warhol replied, "Oh, …

More about Chris Floyd Not Just Pictures | Chris Floyd

Product description

Celebrity portraiture from the acclaimed British photographer and author, with David Bowie, Cate Blanchett, Iggy Pop and more This coffee table volume is the first monograph dedicated to British photographer Chris Floyd's (born 1968) 30-year career. Featuring over 200 photographs, it includes his sessions with Paul McCartney, David Attenborough, Debbie Harry, David Hockney, David Bowie, Marcus Rashford, Cate Blanchett, Oasis, Iggy Pop and many more. The photographs are accompanied by a collection of stories that paint a broader and sometimes funnier picture of his oeuvre.
“For a long time people have told me how much they love reading what I write, as much as looking at the photographs I produce, and that they would love to own a book of this work and these tales,” he writes. “After nearly 30 years in the game, perhaps now is the time to parlay the most interesting, funny, odd, disturbing, confrontational, collaborative and life affirming photographic moments.”
