Projectors / Beamers

About Projectors

Be it for personal entertainment or for making business presentations; Projectors are the ideal choice! When you need to play your videos on screens bigger than the biggest TV in the market, projectors/ beamers are the only options you have.

If you think about it, projectors are the exact opposite of cameras. While cameras convert the light to digital signals or a chemical change on a photographic plate, they do the reverse of that. Instead of receiving the light, they spit it out to project an image on a plain surface. This serves a purpose similar to that of a TV or a computer monitor. But in some cases, they are better than TVs as they are easy to move around and also, you can adjust the size of the projected image by changing the position of the device. But before you start shopping for beamers, read this article to get a better understanding of them. This will help you make better choices when you shop for them.

Types of projectors for your office or home

They are extremely handy peripherals for computers . It is almost impossible to carry around everywhere you want to make presentations. And such a TV, if it exists, is going to cost you an arm and a leg. Even though they are more expensive than a regular-sized TV, when you consider all the benefits of the machine, the price is worth it. However, in order to figure out which beamers you should get four yourself, you should know more about them. Here is a list of the four most types out there. In this article, you will also find some really useful tips that you can use while shopping for them.

LED

The advancements of LEDs have brought about a revolution in projector technology. Nowadays, it is possible to make a machine that does not get hot or consume mind-boggling amounts of electricity. Less heat also means several other advantages. Reduction in heat output means the form factor of the device can be made smaller and more portable. Also, LED bulbs have a longer lifespan than any other bulbs with the same amount of brightness. That’s not all. LED beamers have a wider colour gamut, which means they can produce many more millions of colours than regular devices.

LCD

For most people, LCD beamers are the way to go if they want to project decent images for an affordable price. That is also the reason why they are really popular even today. The blacks produced by LCD projectors are not as good as LCoS, but they are not as bad as DLP either. So, it falls between these two extremes when it comes to image accuracy and contrast. One notable advantage is that they can produce very bright images. This feature makes LCDs suitable for offices and classrooms where it is not practical to completely block the light.

LASER

They are probably the best option out for indoor use there if you can afford them. They make use of laser lights of three colours: green, blue, and red. Individual pixels can combine or block these lights to produce the colour for the pixel. Usually, all other beamers use white light to produce the images. But as we only make use of a fifth of this white light, all the rest of it goes to waste. That means Laser projectors can produce brighter and better images while consuming only a fraction of the electricity.

LCoS

Both LCD and LED styles, produce images by shining the light through certain filters to produce the image. However, in the case of liquid crystal on silicon projectors, the light is reflected using LCoS panels. There will be three LCoS panels corresponding to each pixel to produce three primary colours. And to produce black pixels, the panel corresponding to that pixel will align in such a way as to not reflect any light. This makes it possible for such beamers to produce deep blacks and a higher contrast ratio. That being said, LCoS beamers have other downsides. The maximum brightness of these beamers is low compared to others, making them unsuitable for bright environments.

DLP

These beamers make use of tiny mirrors to deflect light that forms individual pixels. To produce different colours, they have a colour wheel that aligns in certain directions corresponding to the colour. The benefit of this is that DLP beamers can fit in a pocket-size form factor. However, the picture quality of such beamers is not the best out there. These beamers cannot produce deep black pixels and, therefore, sometimes cause ghosting in certain images. Due to colour fringing, you might notice a slight rainbow effect around individual pixels if you look close enough.

Tips on how to buy Projectors

Selecting a projector might not feel like a really tough task. However, because there exist hundreds and thousands of different models of them, it can be hard to find out the one that is right for you. In fact, there are dozens of factors to look for in a projector. If you really know what to look for in them, it can be easier to select the right one. Here are some tips that you can follow when you are shopping for them.

  • Choose the right model – First thing to consider while choosing a model is how much money you have to spend on it. There are models that are as cheap as 300 AED to really expensive ones that will cost you around 60,000 AEDs. So, choose a model that can produce decent images for the price you can afford.
  • Resolution – Buying a projector is similar to buying a TV. In the end, both TVs and projectors are display devices. For that reason, the resolution of them both is a major concern. These days, the minimum requirement is a projector that has at least a full HD model. But as more and more content is coming out in 4K, you might want to consider buying a projector with 2K or 4K resolution.
  • Lifespan – More than the electronics inside a projector, it is the bulb that determines its lifespan. So, look at the claims about the lifespan of the bulb in the projector before making the purchase. For some cheap models, it can be around five thousand hours. For higher-end LASER models, the projector lamp can last up to 60,000 hours.
  • Image quality – Nowadays, you will see several small projectors for very low prices. As incredible as it seems, some of them can do the job. But one thing that all of the compromises is the image quality. In cheap projectors, you will see all kinds of artefacts like colour distortion, ghosting, and whatnot.

Apart from these, look at the size and weight of them as well. A smaller, lightweight projector has better portability and can fit inside tight spaces. There exist tiny projectors that can even fit inside a trouser pocket. Also, don’t forget to check out all the amazing products from the computers category.

Question & Answer

How to select a projector for the office?

In-office environments, people usually use them in a well-lit room. Therefore, these projectors should be brighter than home projectors. Look for models that have a peak brightness of at least 2000 lumens or more. You might also want to consider the size of the room when choosing the projector. If the room is large, you need brighter projectors that can project larger images. If colour accuracy and speed are important, then go for LCoS, LED, or LASER projectors. These models can produce better contrast than traditional LCD projectors.

Which projector should you buy for home use?

Installing projectors is a better option than a large TV. You can save a lot of wall space and don’t have to worry about kids trying to throw things at it. So, what kind of projector should you choose for the home theatre? As it is easy to draw the curtains and create a dark environment in your home, the right strategy is to prioritise image quality and colour accuracy over brightness. Secondly, choose how and where you want to place the projector. There are short-throw projectors, tabletop projectors and ceiling mount projectors. If you want the projector to be a permanent installation, go for the ceiling mount model.

Are LASER projectors safe?

At least some people might be alarmed when they hear about LASER projectors. How can you use something that is harmful to the eyes as a projector? Well, using lasers to project pictures is not the same as a laser beam directly falling on your eyes. It is true that the light coming from the LASER can be harmful if you look directly at the lens. But that is true for all types of projectors. So, you should prevent kids from looking directly at the lens of any light-emitting devices. That being said, LASER projectors are better than other models in some regard as they do not emit IR and UV light.
