Car horns are special sound-making devices that are part of buses, cars, trains, trams or bicycles, and other vehicles. The sound made by these devices resembles “honk” or a “beep”. Imagine a yellow flash whipping through your peripheral vision as the cab screeches into you a downshift in front of you. The driver flips you a hand signal rooted in the antiquity as he carelessly takes a right turn from the third lane, forcing you to slam the brakes harder. There can be only one appropriate response, you slam your palm in the middle of the steering wheel and give an audible signal of your displeasure with such a hackie driving, relationship with his mother and all about his hygiene. What if your horn doesn’t blow? Instead, he utters a sound like a dyspeptic goat and then a long silence. The moment is gone, and your mood is sour even more. Remember you cannot repair everything in your car. So, start by checking the clock spring. It is located on the steering when and is precisely through where you can operate the horn and connect to airbags. Be careful, do not mess with the airbags unless you are an expert in fixing most steering wheel problems. But if you are a pro at handling and detaching the steering when you are good to go. Otherwise, it better is to take it to the mechanic, and the chances are evident that you will damage the airbags while fixing the horn. Check the fuse of the horn.

One of the most common reasons your horn ditched you in schooling is that an illiterate cab driver can blow a fuse. The fuse box is located in the engine. This can either be on the side of the dash or the driver’s side (read the car manual to know where it is located in your specific model). Once you find it, fixing is pretty simple. You will need a jumper cable and connect it to the fuse and jump power. If the fuse blows, it means that it was the reason. Now all you need to do is to get it replaced. However, replacing it demands you to follow a set of instructions that you can understand by reading online tutorials.

A bad horn relay

Now is the time to get out of the car and check the sections of the horn.  A horn relay is generally found in the fuse box located in the engine compartment. Here you will need some more devices to check and repair the horn. You can either use a multimeter to test the relay. Or swap it with eh relay of some other parts, let’s say the fog lights. If the swapping of the relay works, it means that the relay is defective. If such is the case, you need to replace the relay, and you are good to go.  If you are doing it for the first time, get tutorials. Although you can damage nothing if you fail, the horn will remain dead until you get professional help for repair.

Checking the wiring is important.

Done with the fuse? Or do you find it working fine? Let’s move to the next check. Now is the time to check if the wires are plugged into the horn and are completely fine. These wires are responsible for supplying power for the horn to honk. Once again, use the multimeter, set it to DC and connect the wires with it. Take a friend’s help, turn on the ignition and ask your mate to push the horn on steering. If the meter shows the range of 11 to 14 volts, the horn is pressed. It means that the problem is somewhere else. The next step is to check the horn wire harness. Maybe the plug is loose, corroded or even not connected to the socket. Make sure the connection is firm and uninterrupted.
