Know when to give the first bath to newborns

The timing of the baby’s first bath has changed over the past few years. According to the World Health Organization, you should not bathe the babe until 24 hours after birth. Or wait at least 6 hours if a full day is not possible for cultural or religious reasons. This wait is recommended because the baby who gets a bath right away might get cold and develop hypothermia. And in some case, it can also lead to a drop in blood sugar- otherwise known as hypoglycaemia. Additionally, taking the baby to the bath the right way will interrupt the moth-child bonding and skin to skin contact between the two and will also cause issues in breastfeeding success.

How to give a sponge bath to a baby

A sponge bath is just like a regular bath, except you do not put the baby in the water. Here your baby will be resting on a soft baby sponge mat while you clean them. And to do so you need to start by getting all the supplies ready and handy including a basin of water; damp washcloth; dry towel; body wash or shampoo; and anything that you might need while bathing the baby. Now lay the baby on the foam surface and keep on hand on the baby to keep him secure and in position. Wash the face using a damp cloth so that water does not get into the eyes and nose. Now clean the entire body ending up at the diaper area and cover the baby with a dry towel.

Careful selection of chemicals for baby

Luckily today we can find several brands offering high quality and specialised baby & toddler bathing products including soaps and shampoos and other baby body care items. However, a wise and careful selection is always important at every stage. For new-born, always use a washcloth with mild baby body wash. Here you can look for products that do not have any added dyes or perfumes. These are mostly artificial and can cause irritation to the sensitive skin of the baby. Also, make a good lather on the cloth before rubbing it on the baby’s skin. And rub the cloth gently on the skin without exaggerating the massage with a cloth.

Don’t lengthen the bath time

A baby’s bathing preferences are entirely different from an adult. Unlike your interest in spending a long hour in the bath, babies need lesser time in the water. More you will bathe them; more are chances for them to get sick and have issues like dry skin and irritations. So, you need to be very efficient while bathing a newborn.  Also, if the baby is crying during the bath, try to provide them with some distraction. You can sing them a song or arrange some colours and lights in the bathing area. it will keep them distracted and at peace.
