بعد ما يناموا العيال | عمر طاهر
بعد ما يناموا العيال | عمر طاهر
I'm here because I don't know where else I can hide! After I killed my wife I ran, and ran until I hid in a ship I thought was deserted. The port was occupied by a huge fire, so I crept up and fell asleep, and then woke up to a sore wet neck that hasn't left until today. We were at sea, and I knew that the destination was Nicaragua from the cook of the ship who sympathized with my story and allowed me to hide in his room, and secretly served me food, cigarettes, and wines which helped me cauterize the wounds of my soul. I don't know why I killed this woman for whom I fought everyone. My father said, "It will kill you." She boycotted him, ran away with her to her distant city, and we restarted her family's old restaurant. She was good at cooking fish, and I was good at arithmetic, massaging her legs every evening with lavender oil. The men of the city were gathering around the dining tables, flirting with her shiny legs, and one of them did it in front of me and said, "We envy you." The…

Outsider | Albert Camus
Outsider | Albert Camus
'My mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know.'In The Outsider (1942), his classic existentialist novel, Camus explores the alienation of an individual who refuses to conform to social norms. Meursault, his anti-hero, will not lie. When his mother dies, he refuses to show his emotions simply to satisfy the expectations of others. And when he commits a random act of violence on a sun-drenched beach near Algiers, his lack of remorse compounds his guilt in the eyes of society and the law. Yet he is as much a victim as a criminal.Albert Camus' portrayal of a man confronting the absurd, and revolting against the injustice of society, depicts the paradox of man's joy in life when faced with the 'tender indifference' of the world. Sandra Smith's translation, based on close listening to a recording of Camus reading his work aloud on French radio in 1954, sensitively renders the subtleties and dream-like atmosphere of L'Etranger.Albert Camus (1913-1960), French novelist, essayist and …

My Autobiography | Charles Chaplin
My Autobiography | Charles Chaplin
A silent comedy star whose legendary slapstick routines are recognisable to this day, Charles 'Charlie' Chaplin's My Autobiography is an incomparably vivid account of the life of one of the greatest filmmakers and comedians, with an introduction by David RobinsonAs a child, Charlie Chaplin was awed and inspired by the sight of glamorous vaudeville stars passing his home, and from then on he never lost his ambition to become an actor. Chaplin's film career as the Little Tramp adored by the whole world is the stuff of legend, but this frank autobiography shows another side. Born into a theatrical family, Chaplin's father died of drink while his mother, unable to bear the poverty, suffered from bouts of insanity. From a childhood of grinding poverty in the south London slums, Chaplin found an escape in his early debut on the music hall stage, followed by his lucky break in America, the founding of United Artists with D.W. Griffith and Douglas Fairbanks, the struggle to maintain artistic c…

Product description

I still remember the strange gathering of our relatives in our house on the day my father and mother went to pick up my sister from the city police station, all of them came to our house early that morning to see the new-born, and went round the television, listening to the long list of names being recited by a young broadcaster. Until my father and mother returned, before they cheered when that announcer mentioned my sister's name, I asked my aunt in amazement at what was happening: "Did you gather like this on the day my father and mother went to fetch me from the city?!"

She said: "No, your father and mother never went to the city to receive you, you are like the rest of the village children... Your parents received you from the local village station, but Susan is a little different with her, she is a blue-collar."

Before she sighs, she says: "God sent that little girl into our family at just the right time."
